What you could read, before you get on the road

Personally I never read about the country I am about to travel to - I want to stay open and unbiased for all new impressions. Just the way they will descend on me. I hate to travel preoccupied, don't want to take pictures of lacations that have been praised in travel guides. I want to find my own favorite spots and impressions. Just like Erik Gauger discovered Baja California for himself - an absolute must see site!.

I have a comprehensive collection of Baja books in German and English. They are all works of love - none of them even comes close to paint a complete picture. Here is my short list of recommendations:

• Perfect to get in the right mood:
John Steinbeck "The Log From the Sea of Cortez"
Bruce Berger "almost an island"
(highly recommended)
Graham Macintosh "Into a Desert Place"

Useful (there no real good ones) travel guides:
David Peevers, (Lonely Planet) Baja California
Joe Cummins, (Moon) Baja Handbook

•
Must have read for plant lovers:
Norman Roberts "Baja California Plant Field Guide"

•
Best map source:
Baja California Almanc
Baja California Peninsula

Finally a list if you are looking for specific Baja california books (birds, geology, whales etc).
