All roads in Baja California maintained fairly well and are absolutely safe to travel.
Paved roads like MEX1 are constantly upgraded and repaved frequently. However, occasional potholes might appear.
Max. speed is posted at 50 mph (80 km/h) and you'll see additional signs like the one above: "This road is not for high speed." You should follow this recommendation at all times. Speeding will not only get you a stiff ticket - it will raise the level of danger substantially, because the roads are quite narrow (two passing trucks will have barely 2 feet of safety between them).

All dirt roads in Baja are wide and fairly well maintained - however, exposed rocks can cause severe tire damage
