You will need to bring a valid certificate of citizenship (passport) and you will need to get auto insurance before crossing the border. Your US car insurance is not valid in Mexico.
Mexico Entry Requirements:
The Government of Mexico requires that all U.S. citizens present proof of citizenship and photo identification for entry into Mexico. A U.S. passport is recommended, but other U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable.

USA Entry Requirements:
Driver's permits, voter registration cards, affidavits and similar documents are not sufficient to prove citizenship for readmission into the United States.
Why Get Mexican Insurance?
Insurance from a Mexican company is required by Mexican law in the event of an accident, even if you are not at fault
Insurance greatly reduces the chances that you will face jail time, and limits the financial burden you might come by after an accident
Insurance provides coverage for damage to your vehicle or its total loss.

How To Get Mexican Insurance:
You can get online insurance for Mexico or call (800) 966-6830 - in case you forgot to make arrangements from home, you can still buy insurance at the border (slightly more expensive).
I personally get liability insurance only (under $100 for 12 months) - since I don't see any danger of cars being stolen in the remote areas we are going to be traveling.
How To Get aTourist Card:
We will stop right after the border crossing and get the paperwork from border officials. The fee is currently 185 pesos (about $20.50US in November, 2001). Mexican government officials are not permitted to collect fees directly, so the fee must be paid to a Mexican bank. I'll handle paperwork and the bank for you.
